ABOUT ME

Professionally speaking...

As a jobbing hack, I've worked mainly for B2B print magazines and websites, though I've also chanced my arm at a bit of freelance work over the years.

My writing has appeared in a variety of print and online titles, from small press 'zines to professional titles.

I've covered subjects that are close to my heart, such as arts and culture, literature and film, politics and society; to the more workaday business news, features, and set-piece interviews relevant to the trade readership I'm writing for.

In this regard, I've spoken to people at every level, from those working down at the grass roots, all the way up to senior leaders, and nationally prominent opinion formers. It keeps me on my toes.

Personally speaking...

These days I live in Stoke-on-Trent, but I originally hail from West Yorkshire, having been born and bred in Bradford. I guess that makes we something of a 'Tyke in exile'.

After studying for a first degree in political theory and institutions at the University of Liverpool (1990 to 1993), I headed off to train as a journalist at The City University (London), where I gained a PgDip in periodical journalism (1994 to 1995).

Since then, I've been honing my skills and experience in a variety of paid and unpaid voluntary roles, but also chasing the literary dream in my other incarnation as a novelist.

In that capacity, I'm the author of two published novels: Citizen Zero (2017), a hard-hitting science fiction thriller in the dystopian tradition; and Silas Morlock (2013), a dark urban fantasy with a heavy dose of horror, but details about this side of my writing life are best left to my primary site, Mark Cantrell, Author. Perhaps I'll see there, sometime?
